Resene Terracotta Sealer is a water repellent treatment formulated to help control efflorescence and give a longterm waterbeading effect to deter water penetration. Use on its own or as a primer under waterborne coatings. Will not prevent the penetration of driving rain or water under hydrostatic pressure.

Performance and limitations

  • Terracotta Performance 1. Imparts hydrophobicity. 2. Improves fungal resistance of coated surface. 3. Improves water resistance. 4. May be used under waterborne paint systems. 5. Allows the substrate to breathe. 6. An Environmental Choice approved product. Please ensure the current Data Sheet and Safety Data Sheet are consulted prior to specification or application of product. If in doubt contact Resene.

 Limitations

  1. Curing is slowed by low humidity. 2. Resene Terracotta Sealer can only be used over a porous surface that will allow the treatment to penetrate. It cannot be applied over a fully sealed surface then overcoated. 3. Will not waterproof against driving rain or water under hydrostatic pressure. 4. Maximum hydrophobicity (or water repellency) develops after a few day.

Surface preparation Ensure surface is clean and dry, free from dirt, dust and loose material, oil, grease and mould. Waterblasting is the best exterior surface preparation method prior to painting. If moss and mould are present, treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer (see Data Sheet D80).

Application

If a terracotta pot is being coated, ensure you coat the inside and outside of the pot to prevent moisture from the inside traveling through the terracotta to the exterior. Allow pot to dry for at least 24 hours before adding potting mix. Water repellence will reduce over time. To maintain water repellence reapplication will be usually required every three years or when water repellence disappears. Reapplication will be required when water applied to the treated areas does not form beads.

Stir thoroughly before use. Low pressure spray is recommended though Resene Terracotta Sealer may be applied by brush or roller. Apply until the surface is just saturated. Recoat if required after six hours under normal conditions.
